                                                Raymond Street South Project
The District of Saanich is undertaking, or planning to undertake, a number of minor improvements along Raymond Street South. The improvements come from a combination of action items from the Safe Routes to Schools plans for Colquitz Middle School and McKenzie Elementary, as well as from the Active Transportation Plan (ATP). The ATP recognizes the Raymond Street Corridor, from the Galloping Goose (GG) Regional Trail all the way to Vanalman Ave, as an all ages and abilities cycling route.

Galloping Goose Regional Trail - Shelter amenities
The District will be installing a bench, bike rack, garbage can, and bicycle repair station under the shelter at the Galloping Goose, Tillicum Road and the Trans Canada Highway. The installation should happen late December or early January 2019.

Raymond at Cadillac - Intersection realignment
The District is currently realigning this intersection to provide right-of-way to Raymond Street South. The intention is to give priority to cyclists traveling along the Raymond Street Corridor connecting to the GG regional trail. Work entails removing excess pavement, removing unneeded yellow centre line paint, installing concrete curb, reinstating with top soil and grass seed, and a new stop sign at Cadillac and Raymond. This work is currently underway.

Raymond at Whiteside - Switch stop signs
The stop signs on Raymond have been switched to Whiteside to provide priority to cyclists traveling along the Raymond Street Corridor. This work has been completed.

Pathway connecting Raymond to Columbine - Lighting improvements
The District has worked with the homeowners along this pathway to significantly increase the amount of natural lighting entering this pathway by pruning and remove trees and bushes. This work is currently underway.

Columbine Way - Crossing and ramp construction
We are still developing the design for this project. The concept includes the following:
  • The staircase down to Columbine Way will be removed and replaced with a cycling-friendly ramp.
  • A crosswalk will be installed across Columbine Way.
  • The centre median on Columbine Way will be removed.
  • The steep pathway down to the foot bridge will be replaced with a longer cycling-friendly path.
  • The gravel pathway from Columbine way to the foot bridge, and from the foot bridge up to McKenzie Ave will be paved with asphalt.

Saanich Heritage Register

Our guest speakers at the January meeting spoke about the value of the many heritage buildings in our part of Saanich.  A heritage designation usually applies to only the exterior of the building. If you feel that you have a house that has
architectural, historic or contextual value, application forms are available from the Legislative Services at the Saanich Municipal Hall.  For information about local history contact Saanich archives

Mural for Seaton Street Tunnel

On June 26, 2017 Saanich Council authorized the installation of a mural on the retaining wall at the north entry to the Seaton Street tunnel. Constable Lisa Bruschetta of Saanich’s Community Bike Squad arranged funding and Jessie Campbell supervised the youth artists from the Native Friendship Centre.
